The second meeting of the Krewe of Mask was held and things went well. Donna Taylor, Rosalind and Dan Gabriel, Bill Lowe Hilda and John Cashen, Cheryl Twickler, and Cheryl and Ken Gordon were there.
There was a call for inviting all the Nobility and Royality to our meetings. This call originated from nobility, looks like a good idea and it will be done.
There's another idea to include a costume contest in the next Mardi Gras party which also seems to be a pretty good idea.
We worked up preliminary figures on costs including a trailor (new versus existing) and what it would cost to turn it into a float. Mind you, none of this is written in stone. Using structural PVC is an cool idea, especially when the proposal comes from an engineer.
John has asked Ken to get him access to the float parts that Ken has worked on in the past. It might be usable.
Amounts we don't know yet include: what it would cost to insure such a parade, and costume costs and Krewe labled throw costs. (As an interjection not discussed at the meeting I'd like to report that a newer throw - flying discs - are being used now with krewe logos). We anticipate that Membership in the Krewe might start with "Charter Members" who have the right to vote on Krewe wide matters.
There are currently three groups that might coalese into floats:
1) The BPOE (Benevolent Protective Order of Elks)
2) LaGrange Internal Medicine
3) The Steering Committiee
Initial estimates are for a 25 unit parade. The traditional LaGrange route is considered viable, but some thought is being given to running it clockwise, rather than counterclockwise. Why? If we step off on Highland street and turn right on Ridley, we will be drawing people to the start of the parade. This frequently underpopulated area will then be better used, and the crowd distribution should be more even. This would require a couple of police plans such as how to let cars out of Clark Holder Clinic area while the parade is rolling. It ocurrs to me that we will need to calculatie the length of the parade as a part of it's route.
Sooner or later, the legal structure of Krewe of Mask will need to be determined. Will this be a LLC or another type of corporation? Ros will ask her relatives in Louisianna, Ken will ask his attorney here and John will ask his contacts in N.O.
We definitely want the Krewe to be it's own entity.
Dan and Ros showed their presentation about Mardi Gras to a very receptive audience. Ken has it on a thumb drive and will upload it as soon as he figures out how. :)
Also, of note, people like Goomba Bays. A typical Goomba Bay has a shot of Mayers Dark Rum, a shot of coconut rum, a shot of pineapple juice and the rest of the glass with Orange juice and crushed ice. (t's stirred, not shaken - so take that James Bond!) At the next meeting I plan to have a pitcher of this made in advance.
There's lots more to report and this is just the first installment of the meeting notes. When I get time, I'll post more.
THE NEXT MEETING IS SATURDAY, APRIL 19 at Ken's house. Contact Ken or John or e-mail Krewe
